The Jagessar's Fight
We were simply trying to purchase a piece of land for our family!
Our Story
Dear Friends and Family,
Over the last few months, our family has been fighting a battle we have never asked for. Because of our connection to you and our relationship, we believe it is time to share with you a summary of our family's ordeal.
Earlier this year we presented an offer to purchase a 10 acre residential lot in hopes to build a home for our family in Hillsborough, North Carolina. After presenting an offer, which we thought was accepted by the sellers, we asked to visit the land to pray, along with our immediate family and a few members of our church. We were told that the seller had no objection to our doing so. After our visit, everything changed.
The real estate brokers began to make various excuses as to why the seller delayed in executing the contract. We were then told that a member of the seller’s family saw us and did not like the way we behaved when we visited the land. We realized then that the family member saw that we were a family of color. After thirty days, the seller withdrew the property from sale without ever negotiating or responding to our offers.
As a family of color, we believe that the failure to respond to our offers after learning of our skin color was a clear case of discrimination and racial profiling.
Our attorney assisted us in filing a formal complaint with the Orange County Human Rights Commission. They have decided that there is probable cause to pursue an investigative process under the Orange County Fair Housing Law.
We believe it is the right thing to stand up against injustice and fight for equality for all. We believe at the end of this battle we will succeed and justice will be served.
We are asking for your prayer that God will comfort our family (especially our children) as we fight injustice.
As you are aware, legal challenges are costly. We cannot do this alone. We believe this fight is not just ours. We believe our fight is everyone's fight. As such, we are asking for your consideration in meeting the financial challenges to keep our legal team pursuing justice for us, for you, and for our city and our country.
This is not just an adversity, this is opportunity for us to fight injustice and promote equality. We hope you will continue to pray and consider supporting us in any way you can.
We have been advised by our counsel that we should not discuss this matter with others as we let the legal process work. However, we wanted and needed to let you know what our family is dealing with as we need your prayers.
